The Dragon Reborn (Wheel of Time, #3)

I've reread this entire series enough times to call me a bonafide Robert Jordan fanboy, but this is my favorite book in the series. Jordan sets the gold standard among modern epic fantasy writers, and although the later books drag this series further and further into irrelevance, this book still maintains the crisp plot development and gripping writing style that makes good fantasy.

The Great Hunt (Wheel of Time, #2)

Has a little bit of second-book hangover, after the amazing intro-book, but develops the plot and sets the scene well for the rest of the series. Book one spent it's time trying to set the world up, this book continues it and also fleshes out the main conflicts of the series.

This one's pretty rough. Card at his preachy worst.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns

I picked this one up with admittedly high expectations after being told that it was one of the modern reinventions of comics, particularly superhero comics. I didn't find too much to like here. The art was fine, but I couldn't stomach the plot and dialogue. I was quite disappointed.

Faith of the Fallen (Sword of Truth, #6)

Goodkind at his Ayn Rand-ian worst. If you weren't getting it from the already copious hints that Goodkind has been dropping the whole series, he'll make his black-white morality abundantly clear. This is the book where I finally dropped the series, though I should have about three books earlier when it became clear where it was going.

I admit it, this book broke me. I couldn't finish it. It makes me wonder, are some of these "classics" really worth the time and difficulty?

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1)

I'm glad a fantasy series came along and became the biggest publishing phenomenon of my lifetime. I'm not so glad that it was this one. I finally read this one after much prodding, and I was not impressed. Please stop telling me that I have to read to book [three/five/four/seven] to like it. "Really, you only have to endure about three books of pain, then it starts getting where you actually don't hate yourself anymore!" Okay. I'll be over here reading something else.
